Cochin

Kochi (Kochi) is palm-green commercial town of Kerala and the city consist of the mainland Ernakulam, Willingdon Island, Mattancherry, Fort Cochin, Vypeen Island and Bolghatty Island. Ernakulam is the modern city where shopping market, basaar etc are located. From time immemorial, Arab, Chinese, Dutch and British and Portuguese seafarers followed the sea route to Kochi and left their impression on the town. The Chinese fishing nets swaying in the breeze over backwaters, the Jewish Synagogue, Dutch Palace, Portuguese architecture, Boghatty Palace in Kochi enrich the heritage of Kerala.

Attractions :

Mattanchery Palace:

It is also known as Dutch Palace, built the Portuguese and presented to the Raja of Kochi in 1555 AD. It acquired the present name after 1663 when the Dutch carried out extensions and repairs in the palace. AT no time did the Portuguese or Dutch stay here. Its interiors are decorated with murals from the Ramayana and there are some lively displays of royal costumes and palanquins. Timings. 1000 hrs to 17.00 hrs. Closed on Fridays and national holidays

Jewish Synagogue:

In Mattancherry Synagogue is built in 1568 AD. The Great Scrolls of the Old Testment, the copper plates in which the grants of privilege made by the Cochin rulers were recorded and the exquisite Chinese hand-painted tiles are of interest Timing: 1000 hrs to 1200 hrs and 1500 hrs to 1700 hrs. Closed on Sundays and Jewish Holidays.

ST. Francis Church:

Fort Kochi The Protestant church was originally built by the Portuguese in 1510 AD and is believed to be the oldest church built by the Europeans in India. It is here the remains of the inveterate traveller, Vasco da Gamma were initially buried and 14 years later, his mortal remains were taken to Portugal

Sant Cruz Baslica Church:

For Kochi The Roman Catholic Church situated close to St. Francis Church and is worth visiting. Some beautiful paintings can be seen here.

Chinese Fishing Nets:

Fort Kochi The Chinese Fishing net that line the sea-front and exhibit a mechanical method of catching fish by local fishermen in Fort Kochi. Said to have been brought from China by traders of Kubalai Khan's Court, they are used at high tide.

Bolghatty Palace: Bolghatty Palace is situated in Boghatty Island a narrow palmfringed Island easily accessible from the. mainland. The Palace was built by the Dutch in 1744. Later, it became the seat of the British Resident and today this has been converted into a hotel run by KTDC.

Willingdon Island: A man-made island created from the material dredged while deeping Kochin Port. Situated between the main land Ernakulam and the old town Mattancherry and separated by the backwaters. Willingdon Island is an important part of Kochin. The Government of India Tourist Office, the Southern Naval Command Headquarters, the Seaport, Naval Airport, Railway terminus, Customs House, Cochin Port Office etc are all located in this island.

HILL PALACE MUSEUM.

Hill Palace Museum is situated 12 km away from Eranakulam on the Eranakulam Chotanikkara route. Different types of sculptures, collection of rare coins, old weapons, manuscripts in ancient lipis and collection from Cochin Royal Family are exhibited here. Horse riding facility is also available. The Parishith Thampuran Museum situated at the Durbar Hall Ground together with its collection were transferred to Hill Palace Museum in 1997.

Museum of Kerala History

Its Situated at Edappally 10 km on the National Highway from Eranakulam on the Alwaye route. Presents on hour light and sound spectacles of life-size scuptures in concrete, of the makers of Kerala history, together with the background music and commentary with glimpses of the vastness and diversity of Kerala's history over the centuries.

 
Munnar

Munnar is one of the most popular hill resorts of South India. In the vicinity of Munnar, there are several places of interest to the serious researcher, genuine naturalist and the wandering tourist

Attractions :

Mattupetty (13 kms from Munnar) :

 The Indo-Swiss project, taking care of over 100 varieties of high yielding cattle is one of the largest of such ventures in India. The visitors are allowed into 3 of the 11 cattle sheds in the farm. The Mattupetty Lake and dam nearby is a popular picnic spot. The boating facilities, including speed launch and motorboats provided by the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) and the sight of the sprawling tea plantations, besides the farm, make this place a must-see destination to the Munnar tourist. A beautiful garden with over 250 varieties of roses, 64 varieties of dianthus, innumerable dahlias etc, is an added attraction

 Kundala (28 kms from Munnar) :

The Sethuparvathy Dam constructed in 1946 as a part of Pallivasal Hydro Electric Project is a ravishing sight. The tranquillity of the place will never fade from the memory of the tourists to this spot. Cherry blossoms which appear twice a year and kurinji flowers which bloom once in twelve years colour dreams even years after you leave the place. Pedal boats and kashmiri shikaras are made available to the tourists to make the memories of their visit everlasting.


Echo Point (15 km from Munnar) :

On the way to top station from Munnar is a small lake set amidst rolling hills. Every loud call made from a spot on the lake embankment is returned manifold by the echo from the surrounding hills. Young tourists throng to this place to listen to the echoes of their friendship calls


Top Station (32 km from Munnar) :

The sight of Tamilnadu state spread before you on the east and the distant sight of the Arabian sea on the west will remain etched in your memory once you stand at this point which is the highest on the Munnar-Kodaikanal road

Lock Heart Gap (13 km from Munnar) :

The panoramic view of Bison valley and other sleepy little villages thousands of feet below, wrapped in mist most of the time, on one side and steep rocky slopes with abundant wild flowers on the other side make this stretch of Kochi-Madurai National Highway an unforgettable experience.

Anayirankal (27 kms from Munnar) :

 Sprawling tea gardens surrounded by evergreen forests on the slopes of high mountain ranges make the Anayirankal Lake and Dam a very popular picnic spot. Herds of elephants often visit the lake to quench their thirst giving the visitors a rare opportunity of seeing elephants in open place from safe vantage points

Chithirapuram (10 kms from Munnar) :

The middle ages charm of cottages bungalows and courts with the greenery all around captivate the visitor. Pallivasal Hydel-Power Project and scenic tea plantations are the crowd-pullers.


Rajamala (15 km from Munnar) :

The Nilgiri tahr, a very rare type of mountain goat (Hemitragas bylocres) , on the verge of extinction. Half the world population of this rare goat is seen in and around Rajamala. The kurinji flowers blooming once in twelve years abound here. The combination of these two rare sights will make any visitor come again and again to this place.

Pothamedu (6 kms from Munnar) : These hills, covered with 'patha grass' are breathtakingly beautiful and most suited for trekking and rock climbing. The vast tea gardens, coffee plantations and cardamom planted woodlands unfold before the climber a soul-filling sight he will never forget.

 
Thekkady

The Wild Life Sanctuary :

Lying close to the plantations, in the rich jungles of Periyar in Thekkady is one of the worlds most fascinating natural wildlife reserves - the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Spread across 777 sq. km, of which 360 sq. km is thick evergreen forest, the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1978. The Country s sole Tiger reserve, Thekkady, with its bountiful treasures of tropical flora and fauna is the ultimate reservoir of many an endangered species and a rich tribal culture.Thekkady is a pleasant heaven on earth for those who love nature in its wild manifestations.Noted for its geo-morphological diversity of wildlife and scenic beauty, the Reserve attracts visitors from all over the world. The splendid artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar River adds to the charm of the park.This is the only sanctuary in India where you can have the unique experience of viewing wildlife at close quarters from the safety of a boat on the lake. The greatest attraction of Periyar remains the large herds of wild elephants that come down to the lake's edge Also you can visit Spice Plantation visit, Elephant ride, Ayurvedic Treatment etc.

 
Kumarakom

Alleppey

With the Arabian sea on the west and a vast network of lakes, lagoons and fresh water rivers crisscrossing it, Alappuzha is a district of immense natural beauty.
Referred to as the Venice of the East by travelers from across the world, this backwater country is also home ot diverse animal and bird life. By virtue of its proximity to the sea, the town has always enjoyed a unique place in the maritime history of Kerala. Varkala is a small town in Kerala. If you are looking for beaches and are fed up with the crowds prices at Kovalam,then it is well worth checking out Varkala. Kanyakumari

Kanyakumari is located at the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent. With an area of 1672 sq.km. Kanyakumari occupies 1.29% of the total extent of Tamil Nadu. The district name is spelled as ' Kanniyakumari ' in official records which are in tune with the spoken name of the district in Tamil language. The District is bound by Tirunelveli District on the North and the east. The South Eastern boundary is the Gulf of Mannar . On the South and the South West, the boundaries are the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea . On the West and North West it is bound by Kerala.
The small temple dedicated to Kanyakumari , or the youthful form of the primeval energy Shakti (Mother Goddess) is located on the seashore, in the town known by the same name. Kanyakumari was referred to by the British as Cape Commorin. Kanyakumari represents the site where the spiritual leader Swami Vivekananda spent days in meditation upon a rock off of the coast. A memorial built in his honor is accessible via ferry. There is also a recently built memorial to Tiruvalluvar, the author of the philosophical work Tirukkural - a treatise on the Indian way of life

 
Guruvayoor

The Guruvayur Temple, naturally is the main centre of attraction here. The temple can be entered from four gateways, the eastern nada being the main one. All gateways lead to the place where the idol has been enshrined. The walls are covered with innumerable delicate paintings and carvings. In addition to the main deity of Lord Krishna, the temple houses other idols of Sree Ayyappa, Ganapathy and Edathedathy Kavil Bhagavathy.Non-Hindus are not permitted to enter the temple.
 
Guravayur is not only a sacred temple, but also an important centre of culture, where different art forms and the literature of Kerala has been developed. If you are lucky, you can catch many a weddings being performed here, or an annaprasanam, a ceremony when a small infant is fed rice for the first time.

Another place of pilgrimage to visit is Kaladi, the birthplace of Sri Adi Shankaracharya on the banks of the River Periyar. The Sringeri Math is believed to be on the spot where his original house was situated.

A km away from Guruvayur town, is the ancient church at Palayur, believed to have been set up by one of the 12 apostles, St. Thomas. If you want to relax and take a break from the temple excursion, then head to Chavakkad, 3km away with a great beach.
 
4km from Guruvayur is the famous Elephant sanctuary or the fort, at Punnathur Kotta, where the temple has housed as many as 40 elephants for ceremonial purposes.

 
Calicut

The beach at Kozhikode is not yet overdeveloped. It remains a popular retreat for local people. There are two sea piers, almost 125 years old extending well into the sea. There are some nearby parks like the Lions club, and children’s park. It is
to watch fishermen with their small rowing boats entering the sea, fighting the waves and returning with their daily catch of fish.
Attractions :

Mananchira is at the heart of the city and many institutions like the Town Hall and the Public Library are situated around it. One of Kozhikode's oldest institutions, the Commonwealth Trust's office, is located here. The large pond and park are well-known landmarks. Once the main courtyard of the Zamorin Rulers palace, Mananchira Square has been developed into a beautiful park. Temples, mosques and churches surround the square along with numerous traditional Kerala houses and a large water reservoir.
Mananchira Square was formed by joining Tagore park, Ansari park and the large maidanam (grounds). The maidanam has a green carpet lawn and the whole complex is circled by a laterite (a kind of stone) sculpted wall. The entire complex is circled by 250 lamp posts that are designed in the colonial style. Mananchira Square also has an artificial stream, a musical fountain, an open-air theatre and a music stage.

Kappad Beach
Vasco da Gama landed here at Kappadu in 1498
On 27 May 1498, Vasco Da Gama landed in Kappad Beach (also known as Kappakkadavu) with three vessels and 170 men. Sixteen km north of Kozhikode by Kannur road, a small road from Tiruvangoor leads to this beach of historical importance. A monument is here to commemorate the historical landing. An ancient temple on a hillock, facing the deep sea, is an added attraction.

Beypore is a port city situated 10 km south of Calicut at the mouth of Chaliyar river. Beypore is famous for its ancient shipbuilding industry, which constructed uru, the traditional trading vessels of Arabs. The place was formerly known as Vaypura and Vadaparappanad. Tippu Sultan named the town “Sultan Pattanam”. It is one of the important ports of Kerala and naturally, an important trading centre. It is a major fishing harbour of Kerala. There are two man-made extensions to the sea to facilitate easy access for fishing boats. The 2 km breakwater made of stone is another attraction.

Wayanad

Attractions :
Trekking to Chembra Peak (14 km SW) the highest point in Wayand and Pakshipathalam along the Kerala-Karnataka border is arranged by the DTPC. The freshwater Pookote Lake is a popular picnic spot and offers enjoyable boat rides. You can visit the ancient   Jain shrines-the Anantnathaswami Temple and Koottamunda Glass Temple. Sultan Batthery (10 km E) which takes its name from Tipu Sultan, offers access to the Eddakal Caves with their prehistoric carvings.
 
The Muthanga (Wyanad) Wildlife Sanctuary, to the east, is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Advanced trekkers can venture into the Ambukuthy range. The Vishnu Temple at Thirunelli (32km N) is a major pilgrimage point in the region. The Meenmutty Falls, at their very best after the monsoons, lie 30km away from Kalpetta which also offers quick access to the Suchipara and Kanthampara falls 22km away.
